丹田不发力

Years ago I read in an article by Chen Zhonghua that “…dantian doesn’t cause action. It adjusts to actions applied on to it.” (T’AI CHI MAGAZINE, Vol 29, #5, October 2005). Because this idea matched my own thoughts on this subject, I began to research this concept, as opposed to the idea of the dantian as the originator of “internal” energy. I’m also intrigued with the concept of “taking out space” which seems to be a term which I’ve only encountered in relation to the Practical Method school. Since many other schools of Chen taiji seem to view the dantian as the originator of action rather than this “adjusting” function, it makes sense to me that the concept of “taking out space” should be somewhat particular to the Practical Method. Thoughts?
