All your moves must be proportional, when your opponent’s body is together with you, we are also required to be the same, but we use a different term.  On yourself we use proportional, on your opponent we say “We Mirror Him”. Whatever he does.  If he goes like this, you go like this.  And when you can Mirror Him, he then thinks that he is fighting you.

The real result is if you can anticipate what he does, you do it for him, and he thinks he did it.

你们所有的动作要均衡,当你对手的身体接上你身上,你也要跟着他。但我们用的词是“镜影他”。无论他的动作,你跟随他,你如果能“镜影”他的动作,他就会感觉你在跟他斗。

It’s like this here but I never made any change.  You see me move, but there is no movement on him anymore…he cannot feel it.  So this is how to make contact.  Once I made contact with him, so now watch I do it myself first.  If he pushes me, then I move like this.  I never bother that part anymore.  So that he does not know.

If we are stiff, I go like this, his whole body will feel it. But now can you see…there is nothing there.

So when you made this move, I already set you up here.  In the end, he did this, then when there is too much (force), I rotated it a little bit and it went back to himself.

So this whole thing, you’re just fighting yourself.  I was just a negotiator…standing here and say “This Leg, don’t fight that Leg”, but you continue to fight.

I negotiate to yourself to have a fight.

So now this is the technique, go over again.  Once we are here, I pretend I set this up here and then touch him.  And he thinks I am gonna fight.  Just give him this much (hand over student chest).

That little bit of response, you feel a little bit of tension there, causes me to enter here.  So every power he has, causes me to gain something.  We never talk about power.  We never talk about strength.  We talk about that resistance, and got me in.  Otherwise, it’s not like this, it’s not about pushing.  And when you fight back it’s not about keeping it. If he is strong there, I go uh uh, he got me here.  And if I give him a little bit, it’s not enough, too strong here, so I go further down.

So my body actually gain space and nothing else.  But you’re not familiar with what I am doing because I only gain space.  You’re waiting for either I Back Off or I fight You.

I do Either or Neither of those.

Now do you understand?  Same as this leg, when I touch him, he expects me to either do this or to do this.  I do Neither. I get in with no move.

Now you hold on to my hand, there is power.  Somebody else come hold my back.  Or we can do foot, there is power here there is this kind of tension. That’s what we normally do.  I lock my buttock, I lock my hand and I extend my way to behind there.  Can you feel that side, while doing that you do a rotation.  You cannot fight, there has to be 2 of you like this here.  This is you, I fight with you is not this way, it’s can you see it became longer?  Can you understand that?

现在摸我的手,有力度。来,守着我的背。脚也是。这里有力度,有抗力。我们就是这样做。我把屁股锁住,手锁住,而把手到后面。可以感觉吗?然后再旋转。我不是这样跟你打,你可以看是比较长?了解?

That’s what we say you never fight, you Stretch.  Can you see me here?  This is the attempt to fight.  But can you see?  Once I am long enough, can you feel he is going to lose balance, I go like this.

So the idea is as soon as there is an establishment, when he does that, we normally fight or try to get out.  Can you see how you can actually stick backward?  Once you stick backward, you’re flipping him the other way.

That’s what you…many times you go in there, but you’re not flipping it.  So when you have this fight, you’re always fighting it, if you’re able to do this, he’s finished.

The other version on the back, I grab him, It’s only a grab, I hold him like a hook, move closer to my shoulder and elbow, not into a fight but I just go down.  So now tensed up a little bit, can you see he’s too strong, I shift myself behind him, and now I got lever.

另一个方式,是我拉他。像个钩,走进到我肩膀和肘,不是挣扎而是下去。现在使劲点,你可看他多有力。我移到他后面,现在有个杠杆作用。

So this is here, when we fight for this here, you can be strong, all your muscles in here, but I went like here, I went like this.  But normally if you’re smaller, I don’t need to stretch that much.  We’re here, uh uh…all I need in this case is go that way.  We normally fight here and can you see over there.

你这样挣扎,可有力度。但我这么做法。如果身体小,我就不需要拉那么宽。

So both cases front and back, we call it lock the 2 ends, move the middle.  We always get caught and we want to fight more and more on the 2 ends.

The only way to break that stick is to put on 2 bricks, and kick it like this.

That’s everything we’re trying to do.

Change your habit until it’s always like that.

那么,两个方案,前后,我们说是锁住两点。中间发力。每次在挣扎中,我们都一直挣在两终点。

何家伟在加拿大多伦多,曾任IBM云端数据库部门领导,现华为加拿大数据库开发高级工程师。原来身体比较瘦弱,从2009开始习练陈式太极拳实用拳法后体质提高。多次参与加拿大多伦多,加拿大渥太华,美国爱荷华,美国纽约实用拳法讲座。他现为实用拳法多伦多教练及讲座组织者,自2011年以来一直积极地在加拿大多伦多,万锦市,列治文山教授和推广实用拳法。他于2013年1月18日成为陈中华入室弟子,现为加拿大武艺会副主席,和他的老师一样,他觉得有责任将这种伟大的拳法与别人分享。他在2019年获青山教练荣誉,而在2020年4月完成30,000遍一路。从2020开始担任日照职业技术学院青山太极文化研究院讲师。他曾在大多地区的太极拳比赛中获得过奖牌,亦经常在实用拳法网站发表文章与视频。

  1. 1:25 After we initially contact/touch the opponent, we should not change that anymore. The common mistake is that we continue to bother the opponent at that point. Whatever can we do next? Anything but changing or disturbing the initial contact point.

  2. 2:35 We need to “protect” the opponent (do not allow him to be disturbed). Whatever change he makes, we need to go along with him. If we push the opponent, he would know and react to the push, therefore, change from the original position (which means the original position is not protected anymore).

Once he went long enough that the opponent was about to lose balance, he had a slight rotation. Imagine that you have a telescoping stick, someone holds one end of it, and the other end is against the wall. You extend the stick in the middle. The person holding one end will not be able to stop the extension.

  5. 8:00 This particular move is worth watching many times. There is absolutely no fight here. While the opponent was trying to push Master Chen to fall forward, Master Chen stretched in that same direction (his forward, down and around), but it reached longer than the opponent antipated. This allowed Master Chen to go around to the opponent’s back, and then he added a stretch using his head to cause the opponent to flip backward.

  6. 9:34 If we pull the elbow straight down, the opponent’s front foot is there to support himself and match the elblow downward power. Master Chen pulled with his right elbow slightly outside of the opponent’s left foot while keeping that foot stuck to the ground. This created a vertical scissoring action causing the opponent to fall back off the cliff.

  7. 学习了,感谢何家伟教练的讲解。由于是英文听起来较为费劲,经您的讲解好了许多。
    个人学习体会:一是接触点不动用力,不去对抗、干扰或说让对方感知到,可以绕着动但不能顶牛或撤离。二是对方厚时拉薄他,对方薄或被拉薄时打断他(的劲路),三是拉长,接触对方的点不动拉长自己,绕过去,四是挤进去(从空隙里)或说是”流”进去。暂时体会就这些。还要多看几遍,感觉里面内容很多,要练到身上会更难。
