In Jan 16, finding myself lost, stressed and burnt out, I started searching for a new activity to try to take my mind off work and regain my energy and passion for life. Something was missing, but I just couldn’t figure out what it was.
Having a keen interest in martial arts yet always procrastinating to pick it up, I decided this would be the direction I’m going. By fate, this led me to discover the Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method. I didn’t even had the opportunity to explore the other martial arts, because the first martial art video I saw was of Master Chen demonstrating the Yilu (https://youtu.be/AVPN4HCLfKs), and I was immediately fascinated by his form and energy. This wasn’t the conventional Taiji I was exposed to, and I was intrigued by it.
In May 16, I took the opportunity to follow the Singapore team to China to learn from Master Chen and experience the art in person. It was a weird sensation: my body felt it, but I couldn’t explain how he sent me to the ground so easily without any effort. Furthermore, he was very open and willing to impart his knowledge. There is no such thing as secret techniques, only the amount of time and effort you’re willing to put in to achieve the results you want. That was when I knew I had found what I was looking for and never looked back since.
After almost 3 years of practice, I’m proud and honoured to announce that I’ve officially become a full-fledged disciple under Master Zhonghua Chen. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I will continue to train diligently and hone my skills in the years to come.
